Frequently asked questions

What is the UK VAT rate?

The standard UK VAT rate is 20% (since 2011). There are also reduced rates: 5% for things like home energy and children's car seats, and 0% for most food, books, and children's clothes. Use the rate dropdown to switch between bands, or pick Custom to enter any rate.

How do I remove VAT from a gross price?

To get the net amount from a gross (VAT-inclusive) price, divide by 1.2 for 20% UK VAT. For example, £120 gross ÷ 1.2 = £100 net, with £20 VAT. This calculator does that automatically when you select "Gross → remove VAT".

Why do EU VAT rates differ?

Each EU country sets its own standard VAT rate within an EU-agreed minimum (15%). Germany charges 19%, France 20%, Denmark 25%. If you sell across EU borders, the rate depends on where your customer is — this is why a multi-country calculator matters.

Why does one country have multiple VAT rates?

Most countries charge different rates by product type. The UK has Standard (20%) for most goods, Reduced (5%) for home energy and car seats, and Zero (0%) for food, books, and children's clothing. France goes further with four bands (20%, 10%, 5.5%, 2.1%). Pick the band that matches what you're pricing.

Can the amount I enter already include VAT?

Yes. "Net → add VAT" assumes the amount you typed excludes tax and adds it on. "Gross → remove VAT" assumes the amount already includes tax and splits it back out. UK and EU VAT is always included in displayed retail prices (tax-inclusive), so to check the tax in a shop price, use Gross → remove VAT.
