How do I work out fuel cost for a journey?
Divide the distance in miles by your MPG to get gallons, multiply by 4.546 to get litres, then multiply by the price per litre. A 100-mile trip at 45 MPG with fuel at £1.45 costs about £14.65.
How many pence per mile does a car cost?
A typical petrol car costs 13-18p per mile in fuel. At 40 MPG and £1.45 a litre, it is about 16.5p per mile. An efficient diesel or hybrid can get under 12p; a large petrol SUV might be 20p or more.
Why does the UK use MPG but sell fuel in litres?
The UK kept miles on the road but metric litres at the pump, a leftover from metrication. So fuel economy is quoted in MPG while you pay per litre — which is why the conversion (1 gallon = 4.546 litres) matters.
