The one that catches people out: a UK cup (284 ml) and a US cup (237 ml) are not the same! American recipes use a smaller "1 cup" than British ones. This tool handles UK cups, US cups, millilitres, tablespoons (tbsp = 15 ml), and teaspoons (tsp = 5 ml) — for recipes from either side of the Atlantic.

Frequently asked questions

How many ml in a UK cup?

1 UK cup = 284 ml (exactly 284.13 ml). To convert ml to UK cups, divide by 284: so 500 ml ≈ 1.76 UK cups, and 250 ml ≈ 0.88 UK cups. This is the cup used in older British recipes.

Is a UK cup the same as a US cup?

No. A UK (imperial) cup is 284 ml; a US cup is 237 ml — about 17% smaller. Using a US cup for a UK recipe gives you less than intended. This is a common trap when baking American recipes in the UK.

How many ml in a tablespoon?

1 tablespoon (tbsp) = 15 ml, and 1 teaspoon (tsp) = 5 ml. These are the international standard used in UK recipes. (Note: an Australian tablespoon is 20 ml, but this tool uses the 15 ml standard.)
